I just wrote about our “better pace”, and truly we have found a better pace. I sat with each of the girls over the last couple days writing out emails home explaining how their adventure has gone so far. They are clearly enjoying the adventure as well as the pace.
I was suprised to see that one of the things each of them described as something they hope for moving forward was to get along better with their sisters. I couldn’t agree more! The most challenging thing for me so far has been having to regulate the squaking amongst my daughters.
They can be the sweetest, most beautiful little girls in the world, but like Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde they quickly turn into monsters at the flip of a switch. They start attacking each other with a ferocity you wouldn’t think a sweet little girl would be capable of.
During our first week on the road we came up with a little term, “dragon talk”. If anyone is caught talking like a dragon, judgement will be swift (timeout seems to be working). This has helped us to keep the peace, and we have been able to really enjoy the quietude.
Then, just as we were beginning to breathe easy and find our rhythm, it was time to pack up and head to a new location. This wouldn’t be a problem in and of itself, but after a couple hours of hairpin curves and 4×4 trails with 6 people and 2 months worth of luggage packed into a Hyundai Santa Fe… I just could’t take the “dragon talk”… not even in softer tones.
If you know me, you know that I really don’t crack very easily. I’m a pretty optomistic and laid back guy. However, this particular combination of stressors had me feeling like I was coming apart at the seams. We couldn’t arrive at our new home soon enough!
Three more hours of the same plus a few other unexpected problems with the road, and we made it… without casualties.
I can’t help but feel a little bit like it might take a while to find that pace again, but today is a new day… It’s Father’s Day! The girls made me breakfast after a quick refreshing dip in the pool. Today will be a good day to unwind and attempt to find that better pace again.
So far… no dragon talk today!
